How to Use Dolphin Emulator on Android

Dolphin Emulator is a video game emulator that allows you to play GameCube and Wii games on your Android device. It is a free and open-source software that has been developed by a team of enthusiasts since 2003. Dolphin Emulator has many features and benefits that make it one of the best emulators for Android, such as:

  • High compatibility: Dolphin Emulator can run most GameCube and Wii games without major issues.

  • HD graphics: Dolphin Emulator can enhance the graphics of the games by increasing the resolution, adding anti-aliasing, texture filtering, and more.

  • Controller support: Dolphin Emulator supports various types of controllers, such as touch screen, keyboard, gamepad, Wii Remote, and more.

  • Networked multiplayer: Dolphin Emulator supports online play with other players using the Netplay feature.

  • And more: Dolphin Emulator also has other features, such as save states, cheats, screenshots, custom shaders, etc.

In this article, I will show you how to install and use Dolphin Emulator on your Android device, as well as some tips and tricks to enhance your gaming experience. Let's get started!

Installation

To install Dolphin Emulator on your Android device, you need to download it from the official website. Here are the steps:

  • Go to and tap on the Download button.

  • Select the Android option and choose the latest beta version or development version. The beta version is more stable but may have fewer features than the development version.

  • Once downloaded, open the APK file and allow the installation of unknown apps if prompted.

  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

  • Launch Dolphin Emulator from your app drawer or home screen.

Configuration

Before you start playing games on Dolphin Emulator, you need to configure some settings for optimal performance and compatibility. Here are some of the most important settings:

General settings

To access the general settings of Dolphin Emulator, tap on the three horizontal bars icon on the top left corner of the screen and select Settings. Here you can adjust the following options:

  • CPU Core: This determines how Dolphin Emulator emulates the CPU of the GameCube or Wii. The default option is JIT ARM64 Recompiler, which is the fastest and most accurate option for most devices. However, if you encounter any problems with some games, you can try changing it to Cached Interpreter or Interpreter.

  • Dual Core: This enables or disables the dual core mode of Dolphin Emulator. The dual core mode can improve the performance of some games by using two CPU cores instead of one. However, it can also cause some instability or compatibility issues with some games. The default option is On, but you can turn it off if you encounter any problems.

Override Emulated CPU Clock Speed: This allows you to change the clock speed of the emulated CPU. The default option is Off, which means that Dolphin Emulator will use the original clock speed of the GameCube or Wii. However, you can increase or decrease it if you want to Display settings

Another important aspect of Dolphin Emulator is the display settings, which can affect the visual quality and performance of the games. To access the display settings, tap on the three horizontal bars icon on the top left corner of the screen and select Graphics. Here you can adjust the following options:

General

In this tab, you can choose the video backend, the aspect ratio, and the resolution of the emulator. The video backend determines how Dolphin Emulator renders the graphics of the games. There are four options: OpenGL, Vulkan, Software Renderer, and Null. The best option depends on your device and the game you want to play, but generally, OpenGL and Vulkan are the most recommended ones, as they offer better compatibility and performance than Software Renderer and Null. Software Renderer is very slow and only useful for debugging purposes, while Null does not render anything at all.

The aspect ratio determines how the emulator displays the games on your screen. There are three options: Auto, Force 16:9, and Force 4:3. Auto will use the original aspect ratio of the game, which is usually 4:3 for GameCube games and 16:9 for Wii games. Force 16:9 will stretch the game to fit a widescreen display, which may cause some distortion or cropping. Force 4:3 will display the game in a 4:3 window with black bars on the sides, which may look better for some games.

The resolution determines how many pixels are displayed on your screen. The higher the resolution, the sharper and clearer the graphics will look, but also the more demanding it will be for your device. You can choose from several options, ranging from 1x Native (640x528) to 8x Native (5120x4224). The best option depends on your device's capabilities and your personal preference, but generally, you should avoid going above 2x or 3x Native unless you have a very powerful device.

Enhancements

In this tab, you can apply some enhancements to improve the graphics of the games. Some of these enhancements include:

  • Internal Resolution: This is similar to the resolution option in the General tab, but it only affects the 3D graphics of the games, not the 2D elements like menus or text. You can choose from several options, ranging from Auto (Window Size) to 8x Native (5120x4224). The higher the internal resolution, the smoother and more detailed the 3D graphics will look, but also the more demanding it will be for your device.

  • Anti-Aliasing: This is a technique that reduces the jagged edges of the 3D graphics, making them look smoother and more realistic. You can choose from several options, ranging from None to 8x MSAA (Multi-Sampling Anti-Aliasing). The higher the anti-aliasing, the smoother the edges will look, but also the more demanding it will be for your device.

  • Anisotropic Filtering: This is a technique that improves the quality of textures that are viewed at an angle, making them look sharper and more detailed. You can choose from several options, ranging from 1x to 16x. The higher the anisotropic filtering, the better the textures will look, but also the more demanding it will be for your device.

  • Post-Processing Effect: This is a feature that applies a custom shader to the graphics of the games, adding some effects like bloom, color correction, scanlines, etc. You can choose from several options, ranging from None to FXAA. The post-processing effect can enhance the appearance of the games, but also the more demanding it will be for your device.

  • Scaled EFB Copy: This is a feature that improves the quality of some effects that use the EFB (Embedded Frame Buffer), such as heat waves, water reflections, etc. The default option is On, which means that Dolphin Emulator will scale the EFB copies to match the internal resolution. However, you can turn it off if you encounter any performance or compatibility issues.

  • Per-Pixel Lighting: This is a feature that enables more realistic lighting effects for the 3D graphics, such as specular highlights, bump mapping, etc. The default option is Off, which means that Dolphin Emulator will use the original lighting model of the GameCube or Wii. However, you can turn it on if you want to improve the visual quality of some games.

Hacks

In this tab, you can enable some hacks that can improve the performance or compatibility of some games. Some of these hacks include:

Skip EFB Access from CPU: This is a hack that skips some operations that involve the EFB, such as reading or writing to it. This can improve the performance of some games, but also cause some graphical glitches or missing effects.
